A first in 21 years for Servette FC

A first in 21 years for Servette FC, This was the first time in last 21 years that Servette FC began the Super League campaign with consecutive wins. A 2-1 victory was recorded against Lucerne on Sunday, but the thumping 3-1 victory over the defending champions, Young Boys, was more of an indication of their preparedness. Home fans were on their feet anticipating for the match as 8,727 fans watched the Grenat team dominate all the aspects of the match.

ATS Champions was the hero of the day; Keigo Tsunemoto, Miroslav Stevanovic, and Enzo Crivelli who scored in the game. It was now clear that the boys on the pitch belonged to the superior team. It was one of those games where everything came off for the Patrick Häberli led-side and, but for the missed chances, they could have scored far more goals. The Young Boys who were pilled to remain unbeaten at Wankdorf, found FC Sion too hot to handle and looked a shadow of their former selves. This poor performance made people wonder what Patrick Rahmen was doing by moving from Winterthur to a team that is figuring out its form and style of play.

Servette FC's Dominant Performance Marks a New Era in Swiss Super League

The first half will be considered to be of the strongest tests to Young Boys as they were atrocious in defense and equally worst in attack. In this regard, the Grenat seized the opportunity to score; Tsunemoto set the ball rolling, dead on at 32 minutes, courtesy of Joël Monteiro’s laxity in marking. The goal-scoring strategy, which gave Young Boys the 2-0 lead, was an exemplary play by Bradley Mazikou who commenced the play, and concluded it with Marc Stevanovic.

Although the Young Boys possessed players of the calibre of Monteiro and Meschak Elia who executed attacks well, the BD side failed to combine properly at the attack. This is rather bewildering when looked at a team that has conquered league title in the last seven seasons triumphing in six of those. Finally, at the 60th minute, Joël Mall was put to work to make two saves; while, in the 71st minute, Cédric Itten scored ending the match’s hope. But, from a penalty which was awarded in Anel Husic and Crivelli successfully applied the final nails on the coffin of the Bernese side and its fans.

Reflecting on the Game

Up and until the final whistle of the game, Patrick Rahmen was optimistic for Young Boys. It is naive to look into the future filled with major rehabilitations if they are to get back on track to the previous successful scenarios. The question remains: Can the Young Boys recover or has this become the beginning of the Servette FC era of domination.

Notably, this match not only revealed that Servette has all the capabilities of becoming a force to reckon with but also revealed the fluctuation of force of a team which seemed to have been unbeatable in the beginning. And for the fans and the players it is sweet moment, and I think memorable time to stay in our hearts because in the sport, everything is possible and everyone can rewrite history every time they play.
